Clear technical advice, tied to the way your organization works

HAI Consulting is a Canadian cybersecurity, networking, and infrastructure consultancy serving organizations in Toronto, Ontario, and across Canada. We help organizations understand their current environment, decide what deserves attention, and carry changes through with less guesswork.

Isometric view of security, network and recovery work connected as one practice with shared evidence.

Technology problems rarely stay in one lane

A firewall rule can be a security issue, a network dependency, a business exception, and a change-management problem at the same time. A backup can report success while the service it protects remains difficult to recover. An incident plan can look complete until the team has to use it after hours.

HAI Consulting approaches this work as an operating problem, not a product pitch. The work starts with the systems, people, obligations, and constraints already in place. Recommendations are connected to evidence, assigned priorities, and the decisions required to act on them.

What clients should expect

Before work starts, the scope should state what is included, what is excluded, who can authorize access or change, and what the final deliverables will contain. During the engagement, material assumptions and blockers should be visible rather than buried in a final report.

Findings should distinguish verified facts from observations that need more evidence. Recommendations should account for operational impact, staffing, dependencies, and rollback. If a question falls outside the agreed scope or requires legal, privacy, insurance, or other specialist advice, it should be identified rather than guessed at.

Useful work leaves something behind

The aim is to leave the organization with records it can use: a decision log, a tested runbook, an owned remediation list, a change template, or a clearer system map. The exact format depends on the engagement, but the handoff should help the next person understand what was reviewed, what changed, what remains open, and why.

No consultant can promise that an organization will never experience an incident or outage. HAI Consulting can help reduce uncertainty, make risks easier to discuss, and support careful technical decisions.

Experience and certifications

19+ years across enterprise network and security environments inform the work. Professional certifications include CISSP, CCSP, CCNP, PCNSE, CISM, CISA, CRISC and PMP.

Certifications support the work; they do not replace validation in the environment itself.

How the work moves

01

Fit and problem framing

HAI Consulting listens for the actual decision behind the request, identifies obvious constraints, and says when the work is outside its scope or needs another specialist.
02

Scope and safeguards

The parties define objectives, assumptions, deliverables, responsibilities, access, change restrictions, communications, dependencies, acceptance criteria, and commercial terms.
03

Discovery and evidence collection

HAI Consulting reviews agreed documents, configurations, logs, interviews, and technical evidence. Evidence is collected proportionately and handled through agreed channels. Assumptions and access limitations are recorded.
04

Analysis and working review

Findings are checked against available evidence and the agreed context. Material issues are discussed while the engagement is active so factual errors, hidden dependencies, and urgent exposures can be addressed promptly.
05

Recommendations and action planning

HAI Consulting translates findings into practical options. Recommendations state the reason, expected risk reduction, dependencies, likely disruption, and evidence that can show completion where those details are available.
06

Handoff and follow-through

The final review covers decisions, open risks, supporting evidence, operating documents, and next checkpoints. Optional implementation or validation support is scoped separately if needed.

Before we start

What kinds of organizations does HAI Consulting work with?

HAI Consulting is positioned to support Canadian organizations that need focused help with cybersecurity, networks, or infrastructure. Fit depends on the problem, systems, timing, access, and required specialist knowledge. No sector-specific or regulated-industry experience is implied unless it is stated and verified separately.

Can you start with a small, defined piece of work?

Yes. A bounded review, workshop, configuration assessment, tabletop exercise, or recovery test can be a sensible starting point. The scope should still identify the question being answered, evidence required, exclusions, deliverables, and who can approve access or change.

Do you sell or require particular security products?

Recommendations should follow the requirements and evidence, not a predetermined product. If a vendor relationship, referral fee, resale arrangement, or other commercial interest applies to a recommendation, it should be disclosed before a purchasing decision.

Will an assessment prove that we are secure?

No. An assessment is limited by its scope, date, access, methods, and available evidence. It can identify observed weaknesses and support decisions, but it cannot prove the absence of every vulnerability or guarantee that an incident will not occur.

Can you certify our compliance?

Not by default. HAI Consulting can help examine technical controls, collect evidence, and prepare remediation work within an agreed scope. Legal interpretation, formal audit, attestation, and certification may require qualified counsel or an accredited independent assessor.

How do you handle confidential information?

The engagement should define what information is needed, where it may be stored, how it will be transferred, who may access it, and how it will be returned or disposed of. Clients should not send passwords, private keys, recovery codes, or sensitive files through ordinary email or a website contact form. Specific handling commitments belong in the signed engagement terms.

Do you need administrator access?

Only when the agreed work requires it. Read-only, time-limited, and task-specific access is preferred where practical. Access should be approved by the system owner, protected with appropriate authentication, logged where possible, and removed or reviewed at closeout. Shared everyday administrator accounts should be avoided.

Will you make changes in production?

Only when implementation is explicitly in scope and the organization has authorized the change. Production work should have a named owner, approved window, validation plan, monitoring, stop conditions, and rollback path. An assessment does not automatically authorize remediation.

What will we receive at the end?

Deliverables are set during scoping. Depending on the work, they may include findings with evidence references, an action register, diagrams, configuration recommendations, change records, runbooks, exercise notes, or test results. The handoff should also identify assumptions, exclusions, unresolved questions, and accepted decisions.

How are findings prioritized?

Technical severity is one input. Priority should also consider exposure, business impact, exploit conditions, existing controls, dependencies, recoverability, change risk, and the effort required to verify or fix the issue. A critical label without operating context is not an action plan.

Can you guarantee a recovery time or security outcome?

No. HAI Consulting can help define objectives, test procedures, record evidence, and recommend improvements. Actual recovery and security outcomes depend on systems, people, third parties, incident conditions, decisions, and factors outside any consultant's control.

What happens if you find an urgent issue?

The engagement should name an escalation contact and secure communication method before testing begins. A credible material issue is raised promptly with the available evidence, affected scope, immediate precautions, and any uncertainty. Potentially disruptive action is not taken without authorization unless separate emergency terms explicitly say otherwise.

Can you work with our internal IT team or existing providers?

Yes, when roles and communication paths are clear. Internal teams and service providers often hold essential operational context. The scope should identify who supplies evidence, who approves decisions, who implements changes, and how disagreements or blocked actions will be recorded.

How should we prepare for an initial conversation?

Bring a short description of the problem, the affected service or environment, important dates, known constraints, and the decision you need to make. A current diagram or inventory can help later, but do not send sensitive details, credentials, or full configurations in the first message.

Are the engagement examples on this site real case studies?

No. They are fictional, anonymized composites written to show a possible approach to common problems. They do not describe named or unnamed clients, and their situations, activities, deliverables, and outcomes are not performance claims.

Do you work with organizations outside Toronto?

Yes. HAI Consulting is based in Toronto, Ontario and works with organizations across Canada. Much of the work — review, analysis, design and documentation — is done remotely. Where on-site presence genuinely matters, that is discussed and agreed as part of scoping rather than assumed.

How long does a typical engagement take?

It depends entirely on scope, and an honest answer requires knowing what is being examined. Starter engagements are deliberately bounded to a short, fixed window. Larger assessments run longer. The duration is agreed before work begins, and if the scope proves larger than expected you are told rather than quietly billed for the difference.

What does an engagement cost?

Cost follows scope, and scope is set in the first conversation. There is no published price list because a firewall policy review for a single device and one for a multi-site estate are not the same piece of work. You receive a scoped proposal with the boundaries written down before anything is committed.

What happens after the engagement ends?

You keep the deliverables — the findings, evidence, documentation and any templates produced. They are written so your team or another provider can act on them without us. Follow-on work is possible but never assumed, and nothing is deliberately left incomplete to create a dependency.

What if you find nothing significant?

Then the report says so, and explains what was examined to reach that conclusion. A review that manufactures findings to appear valuable is a bad review. Knowing an area was independently examined and found sound is a legitimate outcome.

Can you help us meet a specific regulatory or contractual requirement?

We can help you understand the technical posture relevant to an obligation, and produce evidence and documentation about the environment. We do not certify compliance against any framework, and we are not a substitute for legal advice or a qualified auditor where Canadian privacy legislation or a sector obligation applies to your organization.

What access do you actually need?

The minimum that lets the agreed work be done, usually read-only. Any elevated access is requested explicitly, scoped to the engagement, time-bounded and recorded. Access is not retained after the work concludes.

Where is our information stored during an engagement?

Engagement information is handled under the practices described on the trust centre page, including how it is stored, who can reach it and how long it is retained. If your organization has specific handling or residency requirements, raise them during scoping so they are built into the engagement rather than discovered afterwards.

Can we require changes to go through our own change process?

Yes, and that is the expected arrangement. Your change control governs your environment. Where HAI Consulting proposes a change, it is presented for your process to approve, with the reason, the validation step and the rollback path documented.

Need a second set of eyes on a security or infrastructure decision?

Describe the environment, the risk and the outcome you need. The first conversation is a free initial consultation, with no obligation to go further.
